A green postcard featuring a data centre overlooking a deserted lake

Your postcards are proudly displayed by a top EU civil servant on her office walls.

That was one of the takeaways from our meeting with Anne-Katherina Weidenbach, a top official in the European Commission Directorate-General for Energy. She showed us her office wall, where written messages from WeMove community members from all over Europe were pinned up.

Over 100,000 of us signed a petition to make data centres run on renewable energy. [1] Our community sent letters and postcards to her and her boss Dan Jørgensen. She finally agreed to meet us.

In the meeting, we heard about the timeline for the EU’s upcoming work on data centres - important information for our campaign planning. And she said she was excited to hear more from the WeMove community on this topic.

Many of us are worried about the breakneck speed at which new, huge data centres are built. The work that the EU Commission is doing right now can either play into Big Tech’s hands, or set rules that help safeguard our communities, as well as our water and energy supplies. Thanks to this meeting, we’re on the Commission’s radar, and we’ll make sure the views of the whole WeMove community are impossible to ignore.
