Victory! 🐙💙 The octopus torture factory in Gran Canaria will not be built.
A few days ago, as I was organising yet another protest against this horrific project, I got the news: Nueva Pescanova had cancelled its octopus farm project for good. [1]
Thanks to us. Thanks to you.
Four years of campaigning. More than 130,000 signatures from our community. [2] Hundreds of emails. Thousands of comments. The first ever meeting in the European Parliament dedicated to this issue. [3] A coalition of dozens of organisations. Countless hours of research, outreach, persistence. And hope.
And it worked. I haven't stopped smiling since I found out.
I started this campaign feeling angry and desperate to do something. Thinking of the millions of intelligent, sensitive and extraordinary animals who could be locked in a tiny enclosure for their entire lives. With no chance to learn, to explore or to grow. Only to face a deeply cruel end… slowly frozen to death. [4]
I couldn't stand by and let that happen. I told you about it. And you joined the fight. I can't thank you enough. Thanks to you, we’re one step closer to banning this cruel practice for good.
Just as Hawaii and California have already done, we’re now pushing for a national law in Spain to ensure no octopus farm is allowed whatsoever. [5] [6] And our allies in the EU Parliament are urging Europe to ban octopus farming altogether too. [7]
Together, let's give it our all until the very end. For octopuses, the oceans, and our future.
With hope in a fairer world for every being,
Taïme and the entire WeMove Europe team.
