On the 28th of June, 200,000 people marched through Budapest. It was one of the largest Pride events Europe has ever seen. [1]

Our Hungarian partners at aHang carried a banner displaying the petition signed by over 40,000 WeMove supporters to the march. Together, we showed that we won’t stay silent against Orbán’s attempts to shut down peaceful protest and our hard-won freedoms.

Against fear. Against hate. Against a government that tried to silence love – Europe rose in support of the march organisers. Defying Orbán’s ban on Pride, which threatened Hungary’s LGBTQ+ community with fines and potential criminal charges. [2]

Before the march, our community emailed hundreds of our Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), asking them to show up at Budapest Pride and stand with the Hungarian LGBTQ+ community.

Despite threats from OrbĂĄn warning MEPs not to attend, they responded to our call. [3] Over 70 MEPs attended the march, including a strong delegation from the S&D group that sent at least 20 representatives, alongside showings from the Greens, the Left, and the EPP. [4]

Together, we made sure our voices were not only heard, but seen.

Now, as calls grow for infringement procedures against Hungary’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws, we will continue to demand that MEPs speak out, and the Commission matches its words with action.

The world was watching Budapest. Now it’s watching Brussels.
